Comparison
Vartio vs Checkly
Checkly is a developer-first synthetic monitoring platform with a strong Playwright/Puppeteer story and Monitoring-as-Code workflows.
At a glance
Pick Checkly if…
Engineering teams that want to own monitoring as code, run Playwright scripts on a schedule, and integrate with their CI.
- Checkly's synthetic monitoring is excellent — if Playwright-based browser checks are central to your strategy, evaluate both.
- If Monitoring-as-Code is a hard requirement today, Checkly's first-party CLI is more mature than Vartio's planned Terraform provider.
Pick Vartio if…
- Lower entry cost when you do not need synthetic browser checks.
- Built-in public status pages, custom domain status pages, and component groups.
- Label-based alert routing without writing config in code.
- EU-only residency commitment as a buying point, not a regional setting.

Why teams pick the EU-first option
Vartio runs application infrastructure on Hetzner Cloud in EU regions, monitors from Helsinki, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam, and uses EU-based subprocessors (EuroMail for delivery, Stripe for billing). Our DPA reflects that — no DPF workarounds, no “EU region” flag on a US-built platform.
Checkly is headquartered in Berlin, Germany (EU). Always confirm the current subprocessor list against your own DPA before switching — the answer is what your auditor signs, not what we publish.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I pick Vartio or Checkly?
- If your monitoring story is mostly Playwright-driven user flows, pick Checkly — that is what they are best at. If you need uptime, SSL, DNS, status pages, and team-friendly alert routing, Vartio is the cleaner fit.
- Does Vartio support Monitoring-as-Code?
- The public API and OpenAPI spec already make scripted CRUD straightforward. A first-party Terraform provider is on the Q4 roadmap.
- Can I run synthetic browser checks in Vartio?
- Synthetic monitoring is on the Q1 2027 roadmap. For now, multi-step HTTP checks cover login + action + assert flows that do not need a real browser.
